Treat the problem, not just the symptom
Treat the problem, not just the symptom
I recently assessed someone complaining of hip pain (bursitis) and in the course of my exam, noticed a severe loss of mobility at her ankle. This abnormal movement caused a host of issues “upstream and downstream”, affecting things like foot positioning, difficulty walking and poor coordination. And if not correctly identified, will lead to hip/knee arthritis and low back pain. After questioning this client she remembered that she’d suffered a severe high-ankle sprain over 20 years ago for which she’d had no treatment.
The client was active-attending group exercise classes, but very challenged by squatting/dead lifts and lunges. You can image how negative effects in one area can be amplified if these patterns are performed or trained with velocity (walking/running) or under load (skiing/weight lifting/squatting with chores/stairs). That’s inversely related to our goals of promoting an improved state of being!
At EmPower Physical Therapy, we’re known for screening, testing, and assessing. We are not looking for movement perfection but need this information to make educated decisions for the people in our care. As professionals in the health and wellness community, we do our best to minimize or eliminate these limitations and promote an overall improved state of being for the people we serve. Our goal is to ensure we are working to keep a person moving well and active.
